Anwar’s Plan B - No Confidence Vote against Badawi on 23rd September

by Stanley, September 18, 2008

Now that Plan A, the letter to Abdullah Ahmad Badawi requesting a meeting to discuss a smooth power transition has failed, Anwar Ibrahim revealed that an emergency Parliament meeting be organised on 23rd September to allow a vote of no-confidence against the Prime Minister. This is effectively Plan B and we will now see how UMNO will response. Read more about it in Malaysiakini: http://malaysiakini.com/news/89965

Considering how Abdullah Badawi has reacted to Plan A, by dismissing the contents of the letter sent by Anwar Ibrahim, it is an uphill task to hope that UMNO will agree to this emergency meeting.

Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has also accused Anwar Ibrahim a threat to the economy and national security. A claim which insinuates the possibility of using UMNO using ISA against Anwar Ibrahim.

So adding that into equation, I cannot foresee UMNO complying to Anwar Ibrahim’s request for an emergency Parliament session to pass a vote of no-confidence against Abdullah Ahmad Badawi’s leadership. Like Plan A, Plan B will fail and UMNO will further it’s threatening stance against Anwar Ibrahim. We might even see UMNO arresting Anwar Ibrahim under ISA. Who knows, even nabbing all leaders of Pakatan Rakyat parties and effectively putting the country under military rule.

While watching the live telecast of Anwar Ibrahim’s press conference at 2pm today, he was bombarded by questions on why the defecting MPs are not revealed. Despite being hounded for a different excuse, Anwar Ibrahim maintained it was for the MPs safety that the list of names will not be revealed at this moment.

My take on this is, we have to give Anwar the benefit of the doubt. If indeed the defecting MPs demand Anwar Ibrahim to guarantee their safety, would Anwar be able to keep that promise with UMNO controlling ACA, ISA, police or military power right now?

There is no need to wait until 23rd September to discuss a Plan C. Plan A has failed. And I see no reason how Plan B would succeed against a government that is bent on playing hardball.
