When my sister went to college in Kuala Lumpur, the first thing that concerned us was not where she’s going to stay or her grades. It was the her security and safety because Kuala Lumpur in recent years has seen a spiking rise in crime. Times are hard and pockets are getting emptied fast due to global rising prices and unemployment. These are recipes for socio-economic problems and rising crime rate.

We decided to rent a room as near as possible to her college even if it meant paying more. We bought her a small car to get around the city instead of using public transportation. And while she’s out and about, we advised her to carry self defense products like pepper spray, voice alarm key chain and the likes. Preferrably, she should not go out alone especially at night. It’s a lot safe to be with a group of friends.

The family always stresses security and personal safety first. Rightly so I’d say. Even I dare not walk the city alone after dark having heard so many stories of friends being robbed and hurt.
