Well paid big programming jobs, sorry I’ll have to pass

by Stanley, September 11, 2008

Recently, I’ve been offered a job to re-design the back-end server programming that runs an online ecommerce store which sells promotional items and services. You know, those that let you design and incorporate your company logo onto things like mugs, tshirts, keychains, pens and the likes. It pays well but it takes time and time is a luxury I’m short of these days. So I turned it down.

People often think that just because I’m a work-at-home freelancer, I have all the time in the world. After all my work hours are flexible. What they fail to understand is that even work-at-home individuals require no less uninterrupted working hours compared to those who work from an office. Here comes the challenge as work-at-home people often face with the problem of balancing work, family and household chores. All went well before my baby came into the picture. I saw my ‘uninterrupted’ (absolutely crucial to produce one’s best work) working hours cut from 8-10 hours down to just 4-5 hours max every day. That is the main reason why I’m rejecting big programming jobs lately.
