Magento on SSD flies

by Stanley, January 24, 2010

Having experienced web development in a workstation built with an overclocked Intel i5, 4GB of RAM and Intel 40GB SSD, I am stunned how much smoother and quicker things get done with these top of the range hardware. Well, not exactly the top of the range I admit, but pretty high up on the technology ladder these days. But it is the SSD that makes the biggest impact.

Everybody knows Magento, the fastest rising ecommerce software at the moment, is a resource hog. I developed Magento themes and apps on a pretty slow PC. It wasn’t a pleasant experience to be honest. A page refresh can take up to 5 - 8 seconds of waiting time, it was a waste of time.

Out of curiosity I installed Magento on the Intel i5 PC I mentioned above, without the SSD initially. The sheer power of the Intel i5 made Magento page refreshes fly. It feels a lot faster than my usual workstation, an AMD Sempron. No surprises here. Then in comes the SSD. Magento’s speed took another giant leap. I just can’t wait for SSD prices to drop!

I can’t really put the performance into numbers as I had to return the PC to my client the next day. But I am pretty certain you’ll definitely feel a lot of performance gain just by switching to SSD and do web development stuff from it.
