Starting Android casual game development

by Stanley, October 20, 2011

I’m toying with the idea of developing a 2d platform game for Android mainly aimed at kids. After a short research, I’ve decided a 2d game engine would be the best way to start with. Commercial ones as opposed to open-source options. Some of the best commercial game engines for mobile gaming are also the most expensive to use. One would be required to pay for a yearly licence of few hundred dollars a year should you decide to sell your game in the marketplace. The cost of paying for commercial game engines is worth it if your game is excellent and able to recover the initial layout in time. But with such intense competition, with hundreds of casual games looking to grab a piece of the pie, it’ll be tough for small developers to even earn enough to cover a commercial game engine licence fee, let alone profit from it. My next option should I proceed with this project is to find a group of developers. To form one or join one. Spread out the cost involved in development.
