Witnessing SSD do its magic

by Stanley, November 6, 2009

Yesterday I witnessed first hand how SSD can literally change one’s computing experience. Nothing short of a relevation.

I helped a client configure a personal computer from the group up. He wanted middle-of-the-range specs that would handle normal office softwares, non-intensive photo editing and web browsing. For the budget he set aside, I could easily build two units that satisfy such requirements. So I suggested he try SSD, although still expensive but gives a huge performance boost to many areas of computing. He agreed to use SSD as the system main drive and a 1TB hard drive as storage.

We had a bit of time to spare yesterday so I installed Windows XP and a few softwares on the normal hard drive first and played around for an hour or so. Then we wiped everything in the normal hard drive, put in the SDD and installed Windows XP in it. I was hoping to show the overall speed difference an SSD is capable of to my friend and we were blown away.

The first shocking surprise is seeing Windows XP boot up in less than 10 seconds. Softwares that take around 10 to 15 seconds to load saw loading time slashed to less than 5 seconds. I could see the look of satisfaction and awe on my friend’s face. Although half of his budget went into the cost of purchasing an SSD, there is nothing else currently available that could lift overall computing experience to a new high than SSD.

Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and ATI Radeon 9250 fix

October 31, 2009
I’m using ATI Radeon 9250 and Kubuntu 9.10 (Karmic Koala) can’t seem to configure my graphics card properly which makes the entire system so sluggish it’s impossible to use. As a note to self, I’m putting the contents of my custom xorg.conf file in my blog for future reference. Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala installation doesn’t have [...]

Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala released and I’m pleased

October 30, 2009
I’ve been using Kubuntu 9.10 release candidate for more than a week now. And I can’t believe I’m saying this, it’s quite good actually. With previous major releases, I’ve encountered numerous problems from the very first day of installation, especially with with KDE 4.2.x versions. But with Kubuntu 9.10 using the latest KDE 4.3.2, it [...]

Kubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Release Candidate and ATI Radeon 9250 woes

October 26, 2009
I’ve been satisfied with Kubuntu 9.04 and 9.10 so far. Except for the sluggish and sometimes stuttering graphics with my ATI Radeon 9250 video card. I know my ATI 9250 is an old card, more than five years old to be precise but I doubt it lacks the power to handle mere 2D desktop graphics. [...]

AMD Athlon X4 620 Propus Quad Core

October 18, 2009
This CPU is now the only quad-core CPU below $100 mark in the world. Needless to say, this CPU is now on my list of specs for my new PC. I have been planning to get myself Athlon dual cores and when the news broke about this sub-$100 quad-core, I’m ditching dual-cores. If you’ve been [...]

OCZ Agility Solid State Drive is tempting me

September 25, 2009
Imagine this. Your PC boots up Windows Vista in under 45 seconds, give or take. For RM500, you can cut that down to under 10 seconds. The answer is today’s generation of SSD drive. Patience is a trait I’m really lacking. Boot up and shut down times to me is like being stuck in traffic. Each [...]

Kubuntu Linux 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope

August 31, 2009
I have finally upgraded my workstation from 8.04 to Kubuntu 9.04 yesterday. I’ve been wanting to try KDE 4 for quite some time now. Previous KDE 4.x releases were buggy according to credible sources and that put me off. Kubuntu 9.04 comes default in KDE 4.2.2 and I’ve updated it to 4.2.4. I did try a [...]
