As soon as I came home after sending my daughter to school, I was on Facebook. Anxiously waiting for Anwar’s verdict. I spent time catching up on what’s happening around the high court area. Anwar supporters were there before dawn breaks.
An hour later, the news caught the verdict. Anwar is acquitted of sodomy charges. He is a free man.
Honestly, I’m not jumping with joy with the verdict. I expected Anwar to be convicted looking at how long and how much effort BN put to wipe him off the political landscape. And with Anwar jailed, he is the perfect martyr who will boost PR’s chances of winning more seats in the next general election. But this is not the case. I am happy for Anwar now that he’s free but if BN were to have jailed him, our chances of winning the next GE may be brighter.
Anyway, we must realise it was not a fair judicial system that freed Anwar. It is BN’s fear of Malaysian’s backlash that let Anwar go free. It is us, the right minded Malaysians, with the help of alternative media, social media and network, who pressured BN into Anwar’s acquittal.
